When it comes to getting content ranked in Google & the other big search engines like Yahoo & Bing, blog comments used to be very helpful.
The comments not only demonstrated that your content was engaging, but they also served as additional content to make the article even more in-depth.
However, it’s 2024 & a lot of things have changed in the SEO world. So what’s the deal with blog comments?
Are blog comments still helpful for SEO in 2024?
Let’s find out! Starting right at the top, for those who are new to SEO.
What Is Blog Commenting In SEO?
So, first things first. I need to explain that there are 2 types of SEO blog commenting.
The first type is where you create a post on your website & then you actively get people to leave comments underneath it.
This is done so that it demonstrates to search engines that your content is engaging, and so that it adds more value to the page overall.
Then, alongside that, there is blog commenting on third-party websites.
This involves finding websites that are related to your niche & writing comments on their posts with a link back to your website.
As you can likely gather, one is an on-page SEO strategy & the other is an off-page SEO strategy.
The question is, however, are either of them actually any good for SEO?
Are Blog Comments Good For SEO?
The short answer is yes, blog comments are good for SEO.
Getting people to comment on the posts on your website is great for SEO, providing that the content is helpful (or relevant & engaging).
Similarly, writing comments on other websites with a link back to your own website can be a great way to boost your rankings.
Again, though, only if the comments you leave are genuinely helpful & relevant.
If you fall into the trap of “spamming” links in the comments sections of other websites then you’ll quickly face the repercussions.
And remember; the power of your link depends on the quality of the page that it came from.
This means that if there are already hundreds of other links in the comments, the link is likely going to do more harm than good.
Ideally, if you want to repeat the benefits, you want your link to be the only link.
I’ll talk more about blog commenting for backlinks a little bit further down but for now, I want to circle back to talking about getting people to comment on YOUR content.
These types of blog comments are fantastic for SEO because:
- They demonstrate that your content is engaging
- They add more value to the page
- The result in the page being updated (search engines love fresh content)
For example; let’s say I wrote a blog post 5 years ago & didn’t update it at all since the day that I first published it. That’s not ideal.
However, let’s say I promoted the post on social media & that resulted in lots of people adding comments & adding more recent information.
Suddenly the post became relevant & “fresh” again, even though I didn’t actually do any work.
In fact, many readers (including myself), often just jump straight to the comment section of an article as soon as they land on a webpage.
I love to see discussions about a topic & search engines know lots of other people like that too.
Blog Comments Examples
I’ve highlighted that blog comments are good for SEO but what makes a good blog comment?
Well, the answer to that is relevancy & ideally, a sharing of an experience.
For example, I wrote a review exposing an online scam & received this fantastic comment:
As you can see, if you were a searcher interested in that particular system, then that comment would add massive value to the article because it shares a real user’s experience.
And then, of course, I replied – which is vital.
To build a truly thriving comment section & get the maximum SEO benefits, you need to make sure that you’re replying to all of the comments.
Is Blog Commenting Effective? (For Backlinks)
Now, let’s cycle back to blog commenting for backlinks in SEO. I mentioned a little further up that it can be a good strategy, but it requires care.
Also, nowadays, good blog comment links can be pretty hard to come by as many people (including myself) have links in blog comments disabled.
But they’re definitely not impossible to obtain & they’re increased difficulty can actually make them a little bit more powerful.
However, blog comment links typically have a bad reputation.
You see, many years ago, in around 2010, everybody was using SEO software that would “blast out” your link in blog comments to thousands of websites at once.
As you can imagine, Google came down on that pretty hard.
But many people will tell you that blog comments are still bad. They think that Google hates them, that they’re spammy & that they’ll make your site’s rankings worse.
The good news is that’s not true.
As long as you make sure you’re very careful where you obtain blog comments from they can make for a fantastic way to boost your SEO rankings.
